I don’t hate those things about me â€" I accept them with curiosity and kindness, a smile â€" a bemused smile sometimes as I notice them there again, and in doing so, it allows me to them deal with them. I can be the objective observer who is at choice.Recognising those things about me when they surface; I can acknowledge them and resolve to do something about them. I can notice them, and make a choice to choose a different way of behaving. M aybe be more patient, take a softer tone, breathe, say something more gently, say nothing at all, let things unfold without the need to jump and take over.But I don’t have to hate myself, or beat myself up about things, or spend ages ruminating over past mistakes and offenses. When I am comfortable with all the parts of me that belong, I can accept those things about myself without diminishing my sense of who I am.I don’t need to submit myself to a character assassination every time I make a mistake.In mindfulness, we ask, ‘Can I be with this?’I can â€" I am learning to be with all those different parts of me. There is never a point at which we are complete. I can make a choice about how I decide to show up. Just because those parts of me are there, doesn’t mean I have to show them. He was serving food  at Harlem’s Blujeen by day.Most audiences only see the glamour of show business, but Holcomb’s story shows us the hustle and grind to make it to that stage. How exactly does a modern opera singer make it work in 2017?Ladders talked to Holcomb after his six-show  run as an Otello descending nightly into madness in a Bushwick loft to find out.“There are no black male opera singers”Growing up in a musical family in Detroit, Holcomb first realized that opera could be a career through his uncle: “he came out to the family that he wanted to be an opera singer, and everyone laughed at him because  they said, ‘You’re black, you’re a black man. There are no black male opera singers. And he said, ‘forget it, I’m gonna do it.'”Being dragged by his mother to his uncle’s shows, Holcomb thought opera  was “very weird-sound ing” at first, but it exposed him to the possibility that opera wasn’t just a white, expensive, mostly  European art.By high school, Holcomb’s voice was opening doors. Winning a full scholarship to the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy and earning a 6-person slot at the Lyric Opera of Chicago set the course to where he is now: a professional opera singer who gets to perform  in top opera houses.But that doesn’t mean that one success automatically precludes another. To make his dream “really happen,” Holcomb knew that he had to make the leap  to New York City.Financially supporting your creative ambitionsLike many people who move to New York City, living in a  city of more than 8 million people  means opportunity, but also struggle.“I do have to have side hustles,” Holcomb said. “I’d prefer not to, but…what I had to realize is that  not everyone’s trajectory or story or future is the same. Some people just go and they start singing at international top oper a houses or they get on Broadway  right away, and they get paid well and they can support themselves. That’s not in my story. I developed a career in the restaurant industry like a lot of us do. I started as a server. I was fortunate to have a friend who was a manager at a restaurant in Harlem, and he hired me to do my first server job… After about a year, they promoted me to assistant manager. Recently, I had to step down from that role and go back to being a server because I was getting so much artistic  work, which is great.”Credit: Angela OwensFor Holcomb, having a creative life means “not living above my means. It means having roommates, it means living in the Bronx. I would rather be in Manhattan…or even Harlem, but Harlem is very expensive now. I do have my own bedroom and I make it work, I make it as beautiful as I can on my budget, but I sacrifice, I sacrifice for my dream. It’s a beautiful sacrifice and it’s one I’m willing to make because I get to live a c reative life.”Many people who dream of stardom often quit due to these very unglamorous realities, but Holcomb persists. “It is possible. A lot of people think it’s not possible, I can’t live in these conditions, but I choose to make it work.”On choosing a challenge“In a way, opera chose me. Opportunity after opportunity present itself,” Holcomb said. “I can sing John Legend, I can sing gospel like the back of my hand, but opera was something that was foreign to me and not always accessible, and I see that as a challenge and I love it.”Opera is often seen as inaccessible, not only because it’s two hours of singing in Italian, but also because tickets to see it are prohibitively expensive. Tickets to a 2017 Metropolitan Opera performance cost more than $300. Tickets for Brooklyn’s LoftOpera, where Holcomb performed, cost $30.That’s vital for opera’s future, Holcomb believes: “If opera is going to survive, we need to have new diverse creative ways to make i t accessible to people. That’s why I love LoftOpera so much.”On being told noBeing a black man who is an opera tenor has both helped and hindered Holcomb’s career, he says. Ira and George Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess opera has launched many a black opera singer’s career due to the Gershwin  estate’s directive  for Porgy and Bess  parts to only be played by black performers.Through his Porgy and Bess performances, Holcomb has gotten to travel the world. “I’ve gone to Europe  to Russia to Poland, Greece, Italy, everywhere. It’s taken me everywhere.Ӊ€œOn the flip side of the coin, there have been times I haven’t gotten a role because casting wanted someone who was  more European-looking, or maybe someone who wasn’t a person of color, and that hurts,” Holcomb said about  how his race can hurt  casting opportunities. Those rejections  are usually “more coded,” unless Holcomb knows someone on the inside who can illuminate the reasons.When that rejection happens , Holcomb advises opera singers of color  Ã¢€œto not allow it to deter them from what they really want to do. There is a place for them.” Rejections happen to everyone. “Even people who are not people of color, even white people have a hard time with these creative, artistic careers, because there are lots of no’s.”For opera singers of color to succeed, Holcomb says they need to  Ã¢€œreally be excellent, and find their own path, and be on fire, and don’t take no for an answer…[Y]ou may not want to keep knocking on that door with that person, but there are many doors and many people and eventually you’ll find a door that will open for you and a person who will say yes.”

Don’t make me dig through and find it. Bring it to the top.”Job seekers can take advantage of the standard resume format to make sure “insider” knowledge is right at the fore of the document, he said. “What jumps out at me is, first, I’m a stickler for formatting, and I’m pretty anal. I like when someone has taken the time to make their resume easy to read, such as highlighting companies they’ve been with and their titles, and then waiting until later on to list their accomplishments.”One tactic is to include an ” Industry Highlights” section near the top of your resume, Honaman recommended. It ensures that hiring professionals spot your relevant industry experience right off the bat. When Honaman reviews applications at Coca-Cola, he is particularly impressed when a candidate prioritizes what she’s done in the consumer-goods industry. If you’re going to interview at ATT, that section should emphasize your e xperience in the telecommunications industry.Another option is a skills-specific summary at the top. If you’re applying for technology jobs for experts on Microsoft products, for example, your resume should pull together companies and positions and identify your experience with specific Microsoft technologies. If you’re a contractor, list your major clients. This is also a good place to list the key industry players with whom you’ve worked.Seed relationship-builders through your resumeLamb, told Ladders she is a big believer in the importance of building one-on-one relationships with the people who will interview you. The easiest method is to join the professional associations and social networks frequented by the people you’re likely to meet on interviews and read everything they write, from Facebook entries to blogs and white papers. One applicant with whom she worked found that his prospective employer had attended the same school the job seeker had. Lamb drew attention t o the connection by mentioning the alma mater in the candidate’s cover letter as well as his resume.Of course, such relationship builders are unquantifiable, and it’s impossible to say whether that insider knowledge got him the job, but it surely didn’t hurt his chances, she said. “I think we would be startled to know, when it comes down to actual hiring decisions, what percentage come down to personality, and how important the one-to-one relationship becomes.”Lamb also recommended networking with current and former employees to learn about the challenges facing the company, then addressing those problems in the resume and cover letter as well as in interviews.“If you can identify a real problem they’re trying to solve, that’s terrific,” she said. “That’s something you would aim your whole resume at, starting at the top, and including a statement or two in your cover letter.”After you know the company’s problems, you can put yourself forward as a problem-so lver by listing relevant strengths in your resume, then providing real, quantitative examples of how you’ve solved related problems in your cover letter and resume, Lamb said. “This will help put you in a better position.”

Being an Army General Being an Army General The rank of U.S. Army general is the most senior in that branch of the armed services. It is designated as O-10 on the military pay scale, the highest pay range. The exact salary would  depend on the number of years of service. The insignia for an Army general, worn on the shoulder, consists of a row of four stars. Typically, this rank is not achieved before 20 years in the service. An Army general is responsible for major areas of command, including operations that fall within a geographic area. The commander of all U.S. forces in Iraq, for instance, is a four-star general. The positions of chief of staff and vice chief of staff within the U.S. Army also are held by four-star generals. Famous U.S. Army Generals While most are content to stay out of the public eye, some generals have become well-known, usually for serving during times of war or for especially meritorious service. In addition to George Washington, there have been several American generals who went on to become president. Here are a few notable examples of generals in the Army: Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), nicknamed Ike,  was a five-star general who commanded the Allies in Europe during World War II. He was responsible for the Allied Forces successfully invading France and Germany and was later elected the 34th U.S. president.   George S. Patton (1885-1945) commanded the U.S. Seventh Army during World War II. He also led the U.S. Third Army after the invasion of Normandy, France in June 1944 (known as D-Day) And Ulysses S. Grant (1822-85) was Commanding General of the Army, serving as a Union general during the Civil War. He was later elected the 18th president.   Duties of Army Generals The command is responsible for the combat readiness of active Army and Army Reserve units, as well as the training and supervision of the Army National Guard during peacetime. It sounds like a relatively simple description, but in fact, encompasses all strategic decision-making during wartime and peacetime.   Its not an easy status to attain: Fewer than one-half percent of commissioned officers make it to the top three ranks of Army general. In all, there can be only 302 general officers (generals, lieutenant generals, major generals, and brigadier generals) in the U.S. Army at one time. How Soldiers Are Promoted to the Rank of General Promotions occur as vacancies open up within commissioned officer ranks. Boards composed of senior officers determine which officers are promoted based on achievement, years of service and number of open positions. The Secretary of Defense convenes the selection boards every year to make decisions for ranks higher than O-2 (first lieutenant). The president nominates officers for the rank of general, and the U.S. Senate must confirm the appointment. When a general retires or loses the rank for some other reason, the president suggests a replacement from a list of nominees. The mandatory retirement age is 62, though it can be pushed to 64 in some cases. The Army demotes four-star generals only in rare cases. For instance, Gen. Kevin P. Byrnes, who supervised the recruitment and academic programs at 33 Army schools, was relieved of his command in 2005 amid allegations of an extramarital affair.   Generals and Army Hierarchy Army regulations allow for a maximum of seven four-star generals on active duty at a given time. While its possible for a general to have around 20 years of service in the Army before being promoted, most have at least 30 years experience before reaching this milestone.  The highest-ranking officer in the Army is General of the Army. This is an O-10 but only assigned during a time of war.
