Life is too short
Life is too shortLife is too shortOn Wednesday, US News officially released its 2010 law school rankings (though many readers got a sneak peak earlier in the week). Despite the attempt of perennial critic Brian Leiter to launch a bloggers boycott (The fact that this garbage appears in a major news magazine doesnt change the fact that it is garbage.), the blogosphere resounds with ranking rehash.Above the Law is posting a series of open threads about closely-ranked schools U.S. District Court Judge LouisPollak has published an article on Why Trying to Rank Law Schools Numerically Is a Non-productive Undertaking and the absurdity of US News is discussed from the perspective of a political scientist who has studied its methodology. In addition to the view that any law school rankings are by their nature ridiculous, specific criticisms of the US News approach include undue emphasis on academic peer assessments, the extent to which the rankings depend on manipulable data, and the insuffic ient attention given to criteria that really matteri.e.,the perception of your potential future colleagues and employers. For critics in the latter camp, there is an alternative ranking that exclusively measures employability, as determined by law firm professionals directly involved in the assessment of law school graduates. In any case, before you get too caught up in the griping and sniping, try to keep some perspective. While Im hardly one to dismiss the value of rankings, consider the words of one commenter on the WSJs Law Blog The obsession with prestige is why people hate lawyers. Dont go somewhere youll be unhappy just for the sake of prestige, because youll soon find that you hate lawyers too. Life is too short.- posted by vera

Google has an extreme gender pay gap, US government says
Google has an extreme gender pay gap, US government saysGoogle has an extreme gender pay gap, US government saysThe Department of Labor accused Google of an extreme gender pay gap and said it had found systemic compensation disparities against women pretty much across the entire workforce. The allegations came Friday in a San Francisco courtroom. What makes this especially awkward is that just days earlier, Google said it had closed the gender pay gap globally for all of its employees. In fact, Google said it had solved the gender pay gap so well that it was teaching other companies to do the same.Ladders has reached out to Google for comment and well update when we get a response. How it all went downThe allegations came to light as part of an ongoing lawsuit that the U.S. government filed against Google in January. The government wanted toaccess Googles salary data and other personnel records as part of a scheduled compliance review to make koranvers Google was following equal employm ent laws.Despite many opportunities to produce this information voluntarily, Google has refused to do so, the government complained. We filed this lawsuit so we can obtain the information we need to complete our evaluation, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs said back in January.Because Google is a federal contractor, the government requires the company to file salary compensation data. But Google refused to hand that information over, saying the governments request was overbroad and revealed too much confidential data about its employees.Fast-forward to April 7, and the Department of Laboris testifying that it has the receipts for Googles alleged discriminatory behavior.Labor officialJanette Wipper told the courtroomthat the DoL had found systemic compensation disparities in a 2015 snapshot of salaries it got and it wanted Google to give the government earlier data to understand how long this had been happening. Google refuted the DoLs allegations, telling the Guardia n that it did an annual internal audit and had not found any gender pay gap.The Labor Departments crusade against tech companies discriminationThe Labor Department has been aggressively enforcing Silicon Valley in recent months. In January, the Labor Department sued Oracle, accusing the software company of paying white men more than other employees with the same job title. It also accused Oracle of hiring discrimination, saying that the company favoredAsian applicants over non-Asians for technical roles.Meanwhile, Palantir was sued by the government in October for the opposite problem the Labor Department said Palantir was discriminating against Asian applicants in its hiring and referral practices. The risk that all of these companies face is that if they lose their cases, they lose their lucrative federal contracts. But thats the extra scrutiny these companies deserve when theyre using public funds, the government says. Our nations taxpayers deserve to know that companies employed wi th public funds are providing equal opportunity for job seekers, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs said about Palantirs suit.A former Google employees popular salary spreadsheetThis is not the first time someone has sounded the alarm to Googles pay gaps. Erica Baker, a former Google employee, conducted a radical salary transparency experiment in 2015 to highlight the pay gaps at Google. Creating an internal spreadsheet, she got 5% of the companys employees to share their salaries and it directly led to people successfully negotiating for higher salaries. But it came at a personal cost to her, she alleged. At Google, one of the employee perks is that peers can send you $150 bonuses for good work. Google employees were sending Baker peer bonuses after she made the spreadsheet, but Bakers manager blocked all seven peer bonuses, she alleged.Google disputed Bakers account.Baker has moved on and is now a Slack engineer. When nachrichtensendung of the Department of Labors fi ndings came to light on Friday, she linked to the news and tweeted, Huh. How bout that.

Confidence is belonging and impacts our identity
Confidence is belonging and impacts our identity Confidence is belonging and impacts our identity Confidence is a topic that is written about hugely â" in fact, Iâve done my fair share of that over recent years. The âtop tipsâ type of advice have a valuable place, but I think that to achieve a deep-seated, inner confidence, you need a different type of approach.True confidence is about deep inner confidence. I think itâs about a sense of belonging, and this impacts our identity.Last year we went to see Nick Cave in concert and I was struck by how at home he looked on the stage. He belonged there â" and it showed. He was a true craftsman, delivering an amazing performance. The stage was his home, and it showed. In what ways do we belong? I believe we have aspects of ourselves that belong to us, and part of being confident is accepting those aspects. So we might say, âThis aspect of me belongs to myself and Iâm comfortable with all of who I am â" every bit of meâ. The things I love about myself, and the things that sometimes I wish werenât there, but they are. Conf idence comes from getting comfortable with who we are â" all of us. When we can be like this, it makes us strong and able to withhold censure from others. It gives us that confidence to stand out, speak up, take a risk, feel vulnerable. Particularly as women, we sometimes let those opinions of others take up too much space â" they belong in a way they shouldnât, at the expense of recognizing our own value. All of these aspects of me, belong to me and Iâm comfortable with all of who I am â¦My impatience, for example, my heavy-handedness. I donât hate those things about me â" I accept them with curiosity and kindness, a smile â" a bemused smile sometimes as I notice them there again, and in doing so, it allows me to them deal with them. I can be the objective observer who is at choice.Recognising those things about me when they surface; I can acknowledge them and resolve to do something about them. I can notice them, and make a choice to choose a different way of behaving. M aybe be more patient, take a softer tone, breathe, say something more gently, say nothing at all, let things unfold without the need to jump and take over. But I donât have to hate myself, or beat myself up about things, or spend ages ruminating over past mistakes and offenses. When I am comfortable with all the parts of me that belong, I can accept those things about myself without diminishing my sense of who I am.I donât need to submit myself to a character assassination every time I make a mistake. In mindfulness, we ask, âCan I be with this?âI can â" I am learning to be with all those different parts of me. There is never a point at which we are complete. I can make a choice about how I decide to show up. Just because those parts of me are there, doesnât mean I have to show them. It gives me a choice over my behavior, getting me off autopilot and allowing me to take control. It grounds me.What are your thoughts? This article first appeared on Be Leaderly.

This rising opera singer is a master of the side hustle
This rising opera singer is a master of the side hustle This rising opera singer is a master of the side hustle This March in New York City, 34-year-old Bernard Holcomb was rehearsing for the title opera role of Rossiniâs Otello at night. He was serving food at Harlemâs Blujeen by day. Most audiences only see the glamour of show business, but Holcombâs story shows us the hustle and grind to make it to that stage. How exactly does a modern opera singer make it work in 2017?Ladders talked to Holcomb after his six-show run as an Otello descending nightly into madness in a Bushwick loft to find out.âThere are no black male opera singersâGrowing up in a musical family in Detroit, Holcomb first realized that opera could be a career through his uncle: âhe came out to the family that he wanted to be an opera singer, and everyone laughed at him because they said, âYouâre black, youâre a black man. There are no black male opera singers. And he said, âforget it, Iâm gonna do it.'âBeing dragged by his mother to his uncleâs shows, Holcomb thought opera was âvery weird-sound ingâ at first, but it exposed him to the possibility that opera wasnât just a white, expensive, mostly European art.By high school, Holcombâs voice was opening doors. Winning a full scholarship to the prestigious Interlochen Arts Academy and earning a 6-person slot at the Lyric Opera of Chicago set the course to where he is now: a professional opera singer who gets to perform in top opera houses. But that doesnât mean that one success automatically precludes another. To make his dream âreally happen,â Holcomb knew that he had to make the leap to New York City.Financially supporting your creative ambitionsLike many people who move to New York City, living in a city of more than 8 million people means opportunity, but also struggle.âI do have to have side hustles,â Holcomb said. âIâd prefer not to, butâ¦what I had to realize is that not everyoneâs trajectory or story or future is the same. Some people just go and they start singing at international top oper a houses or they get on Broadway right away, and they get paid well and they can support themselves. Thatâs not in my story. I developed a career in the restaurant industry like a lot of us do. I started as a server. I was fortunate to have a friend who was a manager at a restaurant in Harlem, and he hired me to do my first server job⦠After about a year, they promoted me to assistant manager. Recently, I had to step down from that role and go back to being a server because I was getting so much artistic work, which is great.âCredit: Angela OwensFor Holcomb, having a creative life means ânot living above my means. It means having roommates, it means living in the Bronx. I would rather be in Manhattanâ¦or even Harlem, but Harlem is very expensive now. I do have my own bedroom and I make it work, I make it as beautiful as I can on my budget, but I sacrifice, I sacrifice for my dream. Itâs a beautiful sacrifice and itâs one Iâm willing to make because I get to live a c reative life.âMany people who dream of stardom often quit due to these very unglamorous realities, but Holcomb persists. âIt is possible. A lot of people think itâs not possible, I canât live in these conditions, but I choose to make it work.âOn choosing a challengeâIn a way, opera chose me. Opportunity after opportunity present itself,â Holcomb said. âI can sing John Legend, I can sing gospel like the back of my hand, but opera was something that was foreign to me and not always accessible, and I see that as a challenge and I love it.âOpera is often seen as inaccessible, not only because itâs two hours of singing in Italian, but also because tickets to see it are prohibitively expensive. Tickets to a 2017 Metropolitan Opera performance cost more than $300. Tickets for Brooklynâs LoftOpera, where Holcomb performed, cost $30.Thatâs vital for operaâs future, Holcomb believes: âIf opera is going to survive, we need to have new diverse creative ways to make i t accessible to people. Thatâs why I love LoftOpera so much.âOn being told noBeing a black man who is an opera tenor has both helped and hindered Holcombâs career, he says. Ira and George Gershwinsâ Porgy and Bess opera has launched many a black opera singerâs career due to the Gershwin estateâs directive for Porgy and Bess parts to only be played by black performers.Through his Porgy and Bess performances, Holcomb has gotten to travel the world. âIâve gone to Europe to Russia to Poland, Greece, Italy, everywhere. Itâs taken me everywhere.ââOn the flip side of the coin, there have been times I havenât gotten a role because casting wanted someone who was more European-looking, or maybe someone who wasnât a person of color, and that hurts,â Holcomb said about how his race can hurt casting opportunities. Those rejections are usually âmore coded,â unless Holcomb knows someone on the inside who can illuminate the reasons. When that rejection happens , Holcomb advises opera singers of color âto not allow it to deter them from what they really want to do. There is a place for them.â Rejections happen to everyone. âEven people who are not people of color, even white people have a hard time with these creative, artistic careers, because there are lots of noâs.âFor opera singers of color to succeed, Holcomb says they need to âreally be excellent, and find their own path, and be on fire, and donât take no for an answerâ¦[Y]ou may not want to keep knocking on that door with that person, but there are many doors and many people and eventually youâll find a door that will open for you and a person who will say yes.â

The Problem-Solver Resume
The Problem-Solver Resume The Problem-Solver Resume Your resume should present you as the answer to the employerâs problems. Period. Follow these guidelines on how to uncover their pain points, and how to address them.Say youâve learned about a business by reaching out to colleagues, friends and business associates. Youâve taken the time to research the industry, how itâs changed with the times, the challenges it now faces and the executive lineups of key companies. Youâve engaged in community-networking events, established relationships with industry leaders, and joined social-networking groups to stay connected to current and past colleagues. How do you demonstrate your newfound expertise in your resume and cover letter? How do you present yourself as an industry insider and the solution to the companyâs problems? For answers, Ladders spoke with Justin Honaman, director, customer intelligence, at Coca-Cola and author of â Make It Happen! Live Out Your Personal Brand.â and lifestyle expert Sandra E. Lamb, author of â How to Write It: A Complete Guide to Everything Youâll Ever Write.âThe âIndustry Highlightsâ summaryFor Honaman, the job seeker elicits the âwowâ factor when she demonstrates âfacts, figures and knowledge that other candidates could have had but did not because they did not invest in the process of learning the business.âStart with research. If youâve done your home work, you should know which industry players, contacts, technologies, expertise, companies and achievements matter the most to the specific company to which youâre applying; feel free to tailor this section so that it fits your target employer like a glove.âPeople (conducting job searches at ATT) are looking to see if they can find someone at Sprint, maybe someone who also worked in marketing, say, or with a loyalty program,â Honaman said. âWith those facts - boom! - front and center, I donât have to weed through the resume to find the telecom experienceâ¦.Most people put their technical ex pertise after their experience, and it gets lost. Donât make me dig through and find it. Bring it to the top.âJob seekers can take advantage of the standard resume format to make sure âinsiderâ knowledge is right at the fore of the document, he said. âWhat jumps out at me is, first, Iâm a stickler for formatting, and Iâm pretty anal. I like when someone has taken the time to make their resume easy to read, such as highlighting companies theyâve been with and their titles, and then waiting until later on to list their accomplishments.âOne tactic is to include an â Industry Highlightsâ section near the top of your resume, Honaman recommended. It ensures that hiring professionals spot your relevant industry experience right off the bat. When Honaman reviews applications at Coca-Cola, he is particularly impressed when a candidate prioritizes what sheâs done in the consumer-goods industry. If youâre going to interview at ATT, that section should emphasize your e xperience in the telecommunications industry.Another option is a skills-specific summary at the top. If youâre applying for technology jobs for experts on Microsoft products, for example, your resume should pull together companies and positions and identify your experience with specific Microsoft technologies. If youâre a contractor, list your major clients. This is also a good place to list the key industry players with whom youâve worked.Seed relationship-builders through your resumeLamb, told Ladders she is a big believer in the importance of building one-on-one relationships with the people who will interview you. The easiest method is to join the professional associations and social networks frequented by the people youâre likely to meet on interviews and read everything they write, from Facebook entries to blogs and white papers. One applicant with whom she worked found that his prospective employer had attended the same school the job seeker had. Lamb drew attention t o the connection by mentioning the alma mater in the candidateâs cover letter as well as his resume.Of course, such relationship builders are unquantifiable, and itâs impossible to say whether that insider knowledge got him the job, but it surely didnât hurt his chances, she said. âI think we would be startled to know, when it comes down to actual hiring decisions, what percentage come down to personality, and how important the one-to-one relationship becomes.âLamb also recommended networking with current and former employees to learn about the challenges facing the company, then addressing those problems in the resume and cover letter as well as in interviews.âIf you can identify a real problem theyâre trying to solve, thatâs terrific,â she said. âThatâs something you would aim your whole resume at, starting at the top, and including a statement or two in your cover letter.âAfter you know the companyâs problems, you can put yourself forward as a problem-so lver by listing relevant strengths in your resume, then providing real, quantitative examples of how youâve solved related problems in your cover letter and resume, Lamb said. âThis will help put you in a better position.â

The Critical First Step to Reaching More Candidates
The Critical First Step to Reaching More Candidates The Critical First Step to Reaching More Candidates If youâre a recruiter in todayâs job market you know just how hard it can be finding the perfect candidate for a clientâs new job listing. With unemployment near record lows, quality employees are increasingly sticking with their current positions. When candidates are looking, they tend to demand higher salaries and often want to test the waters before making final decisions. Itâs vital, then, that job placement professionals get their opportunities in front of as many qualified candidates as possible. Scouring through stacks of resumes and perusing the white pages of the local paper isnât exactly an option in modern times, however. The technological equivalent, namely sponsored listings on websites where professionals in the desired field are known to congregate, are a key element to any successful job search. Here we delve into why advertising campaigns are the critical first step to reaching more candidates. 1. Sponsored Listings Lead to Incremental Traffic Sure, you may be able to post a job listing to your recruiting companyâs board and call it a day. Youâll probably appear in a few organic internet searches and may even land a resume or two for review. Sponsored ads, those you pay for with targeted keywords that direct users straight to your listing, however, can help up the numbers of paid and unpaid prospects. The reason behind this is a popularity contest of sorts. Search browsers are designed to prioritize websites and listings that get more traffic overall. These searches canât differentiate between a website or page that receives 100 organic hits and 900 targeted advertising hits, they only recognize the gross total of 1000 overall views. This means that paying for a few well-placed ads to target candidates for a job listing can not only up your sponsored numbers, they will also increase the natural attention and ranking of your page and website overall. 2. Increased Combined Conversion for Advertisers Whether in sales or recruiting, itâs a fact that those with advertising budgets see a higher rate of conversion for sales than when organic searches alone are utilized. Part of this is due to the fact that advertisements are often carefully tailored to attract the attention of the most relevant eyes. Marketing your product, or placement, to those who are potentially the most relevant will lead to a higher quality recruiting candidate that has been specifically targeted based on your listing keywords. 3. Increased and Positive Brand Presence If youâre in the sales industry, taking out an ad in the local paper proclaiming your latest holiday sale or buying a commercial on prime time are viable options for attracting attention to your name and brand message. As a recruiter, however, hiring a skywriter to pull a banner across a crowded beach probably isnât going to set the right tone. Targeted advertising, on the other hand, is definitely seen as a more professional and acceptable method of attracting the right kind of attention. Sponsoring a few ads on select career-themed websites will make potential candidate not only aware of the present opportunity but will also have them thinking your companyâs name when they are next in the market. Positive brand image as a recruiting company helps ensure that the highest quality job seekers equate your name with a professional and effective source for making career steps. The Final Word on Ads and Recruiters As you can see, advertising using targeted phrases and in select venues can have an immediate and long-term impact on your recruiting efforts. An effective ad buy not only helps you staff current openings, it can also ensure that candidates and companies have a positive outlook on your brand and know where to go the next time theyâre in the market. Start small with a realistic budget for a few key positions and watch the returns come in the form of higher levels of client satisfaction across the board.

Being an Army General
Being an Army General Being an Army General The rank of U.S. Army general is the most senior in that branch of the armed services. It is designated as O-10 on the military pay scale, the highest pay range. The exact salary would depend on the number of years of service. The insignia for an Army general, worn on the shoulder, consists of a row of four stars. Typically, this rank is not achieved before 20 years in the service. An Army general is responsible for major areas of command, including operations that fall within a geographic area. The commander of all U.S. forces in Iraq, for instance, is a four-star general. The positions of chief of staff and vice chief of staff within the U.S. Army also are held by four-star generals. Famous U.S. Army Generals While most are content to stay out of the public eye, some generals have become well-known, usually for serving during times of war or for especially meritorious service. In addition to George Washington, there have been several American generals who went on to become president. Here are a few notable examples of generals in the Army: Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969), nicknamed Ike, was a five-star general who commanded the Allies in Europe during World War II. He was responsible for the Allied Forces successfully invading France and Germany and was later elected the 34th U.S. president. George S. Patton (1885-1945) commanded the U.S. Seventh Army during World War II. He also led the U.S. Third Army after the invasion of Normandy, France in June 1944 (known as D-Day) And Ulysses S. Grant (1822-85) was Commanding General of the Army, serving as a Union general during the Civil War. He was later elected the 18th president. Duties of Army Generals The command is responsible for the combat readiness of active Army and Army Reserve units, as well as the training and supervision of the Army National Guard during peacetime. It sounds like a relatively simple description, but in fact, encompasses all strategic decision-making during wartime and peacetime. Its not an easy status to attain: Fewer than one-half percent of commissioned officers make it to the top three ranks of Army general. In all, there can be only 302 general officers (generals, lieutenant generals, major generals, and brigadier generals) in the U.S. Army at one time. How Soldiers Are Promoted to the Rank of General Promotions occur as vacancies open up within commissioned officer ranks. Boards composed of senior officers determine which officers are promoted based on achievement, years of service and number of open positions. The Secretary of Defense convenes the selection boards every year to make decisions for ranks higher than O-2 (first lieutenant). The president nominates officers for the rank of general, and the U.S. Senate must confirm the appointment. When a general retires or loses the rank for some other reason, the president suggests a replacement from a list of nominees. The mandatory retirement age is 62, though it can be pushed to 64 in some cases. The Army demotes four-star generals only in rare cases. For instance, Gen. Kevin P. Byrnes, who supervised the recruitment and academic programs at 33 Army schools, was relieved of his command in 2005 amid allegations of an extramarital affair. Generals and Army Hierarchy Army regulations allow for a maximum of seven four-star generals on active duty at a given time. While its possible for a general to have around 20 years of service in the Army before being promoted, most have at least 30 years experience before reaching this milestone. The highest-ranking officer in the Army is General of the Army. This is an O-10 but only assigned during a time of war.

Positive Reference Letter for a Technical Writer
Positive Reference Letter for a Technical Writer Positive Reference Letter for a Technical Writer Layoffs are unpleasant for everyone involved- those being laid off and those having to deliver the bad news. But one thing that can soften the blow to a certain degree is a positive reference letter. If youre the one being laid off, its a good idea to request a positive reference letter after hearing the bad news. Your boss is likely to be willing to do this to help ease the blow and to help get you back on your feet again as quickly as possible. If youre the one doing the laying off, its a good idea to offer such a letter or even to have one prepared when delivering the bad news. Nothing can take away the sting of losing a job, but an outgoing employee will exit with more confidence knowing that you are in his corner during his or her job search. Sample Reference Letter for a Laid-off Technical Writer The following is a sample reference letter for a technical writer who was laid off after the position was outsourced. This letter can be customized and used for other positions as long as the employee held a position that called for the use of specific tech skills and the employee lost his or her job due to no fault of their own. Use this sample reference letter as a guideline for writing your references: Name of RecipientTitle of RecipientRecipient Company NameRecipient Company AddressCity, State, ZipDateTo Whom It May Concern: (or contact name requesting reference)John Doe worked for me at XYZ Company for three years as a senior technical writer for the period between (start and end date). I was Johns manager at XYZ Company the entire time of his employment and would like to recommend him for employment with your organization. While at XYZ Company, Johns performance was exemplary. John is a conscientious, highly-skilled technical writer. He is detail-oriented and has a firm grasp of technical terms. John has a great ability to write in a way that can be understood by technical and nontechnical personnel alike.Johns recent layoff from XYZ Company was a result of outsourcing his responsibilities made at a corporate level, not as a result of any performance issues on his part. If conditions at XYZ Company change, I would not hesitate to hire him back because he was a valuable member of the team.If you would like to speak to me about Johns skills, accomplishments, or work habits, please do not hesitate to call me directly at (555) 555-1111.Sincerely,Manager NameManager Title Adding Additional Information The job of a technical writer is two-fold. The employee needs to be a skilled writer in a particular field but also needs to have the skill set to translate esoteric information into layperson terms. A successful employee should be able to create technical documents and manuals and explain complex information in a clear and concise manner. They also must be able to work with the technical staff to ensure the accuracy of all product descriptions, even though their main talent is writing. When you write a reference letter, be sure to specifically express to the potential employer that John Doe mastered both job requirements. Feel free to elaborate (where appropriate) on Johns day-to-day duties, such as planning, developing, organizing, writing, and editing operational procedure manuals. Many tech writers are charged with analyzing documents to maintain continuity of style of content, which highlights the long-term importance of their job. Dont forget to note this in your letter. While most companies dont require reference letters to be on company letterhead, writing a reference on company letterhead will make you seem more credible to a prospective employer, so opt for letterhead overwriting the recommendation on a blank piece of paper. If you write a digital version, be sure to incorporate your companys logo.

What To Do When Your Career Isnt Panning Out
What To Do When Your Career Isn't Panning Out What To Do When Your Career Isn't Panning Out Create a plan of action for when your current career just isnât cutting it.Youâve chosen your career path. Youâve been networking, attending interviews, and may have even landed a position. You can have a career in your industry and still believe that it isnât working for you. There are a variety of reasons to decide that your career path isnât working out. The very first thing you need to decide is why it isnât working. From there you can decide on the best course of action, whether that be to stick to the path you are currently on or to try to switch to another career.Thereâs no growth opportunities at your current position. You may feel like your career isnât working out because there is no opportunity for advancement. You may have been working at this job for several years and have not been promoted, received a raise, etc. You need to find out if this is a common trend for the entire industry or just your current positon. If itâs the latter, then itâs time to find a new job. Start putting out applications for new positions, continue networking, and prepare for interviews. If you know now that your current employer is a dead-end, then get out.You canât find a job.Youâve finished school, gotten a degree, and have continued getting as much training as possible. But when it comes to finding a job, you are out of luck. This is the time to look at the statistics for the industry youâre trying to break into. Are there many job openings at the moment? What qualifications do you need to land a job? It could be that you donât have what employers are looking for. A good way to continue to gain experience is by volunteering at relevant positions. If youâre trying to break into a dying industry and simply canât find open positions, then it may be time to switch career paths. You feel unfulfilled. Many people simply fall into a career path. Maybe you were offered a job and just never left. You followed a family member in their footsteps. Wha tever the reason, you never got the chance to explore different careers to figure out what you want out of a job. Because of this, your current career path may not feel fulfilling or enjoyable. You can look at your current career and see if there are projects or assignments you can take on that would make the job worthwhile. However, if you are set on wanting a different career, then look at the steps necessary to make a career change.Your degree isnât good enough.Sometimes, just having a degree isnât good enough. Certain employers look at the type of degree you have, where you got your degree from, what your educational accomplishments were, etc. If your degree is what is blocking you from getting into your chosen career path, then you have a few options. Try to get some experience- the more experience you have related to the industry, the less your degree matters. You can get more experience through volunteer work or getting an internship. You can try to pad your degree with added qualifications. Take certification programs, attend workshops, and go to seminars. If you really think your outlook is bleak, you can consider returning to school to get a more appropriate degree.Your current field is drying up.In todayâs economy, a lot of industries are shrinking. Business are closing, employment is being outsourced, and current employees are being laid off. If you are one of those current employees, you may be seeing your working days at your current company coming to an end. In this case, you have to work quickly. You can try to move to a company that is steadier and likely to survive the shrinkage without letting go of employees. To do this you want to start networking and attempt to make connections within that company. If you think it would be best to remove yourself from the industry, you can try to find a career that closely relates to your current skills- one where your skills can transfer over. This will be easier than switching to a career path th at is vastly different.
